Portugal Telecom, like many former state-owned incumbent telephony providers, still has the majority of Portugal’s corporate business customers as well as many mid-sized and small-medium enterprise customers. Portugal Telecom has selected Shipnet from PT Inovação to provide IP Centrex (hosted PBX) services to its corporate and SME customers.

PT Inovação – a research and development company within the Portugal Telecom Group with products deployed in four continents – uses OpenCloud Rhino as the core platform for their IP-Centrex Shipnet product. OpenCloud Rhino provides Shipnet with support for SIP and GSM protocols and Diameter for charging. It also provides the low-latency, fives nines runtime environment for the Shipnet applications and services.

The resulting fully convergent solution provides improved services to enterprise employees at costs significantly lower than regular PBX solutions for SME and large enterprises with a single or multiple sites – integrating all the company’s branches into one system across different locations and network types. Mobile phones are included in the Centrex call group to support enterprise-wide PBX mobility, and advanced Class 5 services enable seamless mobility between dual-mode Wi-Fi/ Cellular devices.

The solution provides a full and extensive range of Centrex services over IP, including:

  1. Call control - The application provides comprehensive management of incoming calls including call queues, multiple attendants, announcement, routing to voicemail, VCC integration, etc
  2. SMS/ MMS handling - The application allows sending SMS/ MMS to the individuals and groups of users
  3. Attendant Client - The customisable attendant graphical user interface provides a modern call information, user status and statistics for effective call management
  4. Personal assistant (Handset and PC based) - User interface for management of call filtering and routing

The hosted PBX (including IP Centrex) service is an enduring, real-life example of the cloud-based services business model. OpenCloud is seeing renewed and fervent interest in hosted PBX solutions: the Shipnet solution developed by PT Inovação and deployed by Portugal Telecom is just one of a number of similar hosted PBX deployments based on OpenCloud’s Rhino platform around the world.
