Converged Telecom Service Broking Vodafone Portugal
Through 2009, Vodafone Group ran extensive evaluation trials of Telecom Service Broker technology to identify and approve two suppliers of Telecom Service Broker products to the Vodafone Group. OpenCloud Rhino Service Interaction Server (SIS) was one of the selected and approved suppliers.
During this time and through into 2010, Vodafone Portugal was forming its plans for the introduction of an IMS core network. Its network architects were determined that they should:
- Have efficient interworking of Services between the packet core network and the circuit core network (aka IM-SSF and R-IM-SSF) through the extended period of dual network operation that they envisaged;
- Have a clean separation between Service Layer and Core Network layer;
- Be able to compose new and variant services efficiently without changing the underlying service delivery platforms along the lines outlined in the SCIM section of IMS specification. Importantly, this capability was required in all-IN environments to simplify and extend IN trigger chaining, within the SIP environment, across the IP and SS7 networks and into the web services domain.
As a result of this, in mid 2010 Vodafone Portugal became the first new Vodafone operating company to select OpenCloud as their Service Capability Interaction Management (SCIM) product supplier.
OpenCloud’s Service Broker product was selected to enable the seamless convergence of legacy services with new data services and to satisfy Vodafone Portugal’s subscribers’ growing desire for personalized services. Rhino SIS enables the integration of new real-time voice and video services into existing offerings, allows the creation of new service bundles combining legacy and new service components and so expands the range of services.
The introduction of new services to meet the demands of smartphone users in particular, presents a huge challenge to operators since most operate a multi-vendor network. OpenCloud Rhino SIS™ enables the creation of entirely new services as well as bundles of existing and new services.
Because Vodafone Portugal operates a multi-vendor network, Rhino SIS cuts the time and cost of launching new services substantially. It also allows Vodafone Portugal to offer new real-time services without the need to adapt other network elements, enabling continuity with established systems such as charging and billing.
The Rhino SIS system is live in Vodafone Portugal.
