OpenCloud platform enables development of innovative fixed-mobile application

March 23 2007, Cambridge, UK

OpenCloud Limited, the supplier of open-standards-based application servers for the deployment of next-generation convergent telecommunications services, today announced that Tango Networks has recently received first round funding for its Abrazo solution, built on OpenCloud’s unique Rhino™ platform. Tango Abrazo enables any mobile phone to become a true PBX extension on the network for both out- and in-bound calling, and is just one example of the hundreds of innovative new services being developed by OpenCloud’s partners using Rhino.

OpenCloud Rhino is a robust, carrier-grade, JAIN SLEE standard-compliant application server that provides continuous availability, low latency, and scalability.  It enables third parties such as Tango Networks to rapidly develop complex and robust applications in an open environment.  Open standards are key to releasing telco operators from stifling vendor lock-in, and ISVs using platforms such as Rhino are revolutionising the services that telcos are able to bring to market.

In the case of Tango Networks, it was able to download OpenCloud’s Rhino Software Development Kit (SDK) free of charge and develop its Abrazo solution independently using the platform. Based on the product’s business benefits and robustness, Tango was able to secure first round funding of $25million from strategic partners including Motorola and Nortel. The availability of technology such as Rhino™ is driving the development of more and more of these innovative applications and changing the face of the telecoms industry.

Stephen Newton, CEO at OpenCloud, said: “Tango Networks’ success is just one example of the exciting solutions that our partners are able to build using Rhino™. The open standards approach finally allows telcos to move away from expensive proprietary platforms and we are seeing a massive increase in the number of applications providers looking to take advantage of this new market.”

In order to support the proliferation of applications providers such as Tango Networks, OpenCloud has developed its Partner Ecosystem to assist in the development, marketing, sales and deployment of solutions built on the Rhino™ platform. The Ecosystem supports third parties - independent software vendors (ISVs), network equipment providers (NEPs), systems integrators (SIs) and the Java development community - across the value chain. OpenCloud Partners benefit from lower technology and financial barriers to market entry, reduced technology risk for building new services, and support for service development teams.  For enterprises and carriers, OpenCloud’s Partner Ecosystem gives them access to innovative applications and open platforms that can be seamlessly integrated with their existing communications infrastructure.

Stephen Newton adds: “We want to simplify the development burden by providing a consistent, standard and flexible programming model for telecommunications services.  Through the OpenCloud Partner Ecosystem, third parties like Tango can focus more on innovation and less on implementation by developing their applications and services on the open and carrier-grade Rhino™ platform.”
