Reverse IM-SSF

Reverse IM-SSF

Unlike the IM-SSF, the Reverse IM-SSF (R-IM-SSF) is not specified in the IMS architecture. It is its natural complement, however, providing connectivity and access to applications/ services in the opposite direction. The IM-SSF is attractive as it means that the network operator does not need to replicate all the existing services again in the IMS domain in order to meet customer’s needs. The R-IM-SSF means that the existing subscriber base – hugely in the majority and likely to remain so for a considerable time – can access the new SIP application server-hosted services and so generate additional revenues from the IMS infrastructure ahead of subscribers migrating.

Although conceptually the mirror of the IM-SSF, the R-IM-SSF has to implement completely different Finite State Machines (FSM) to act as a proxy IMS subscriber to the FSMs required in the opposite direction.

OpenCloud Rhino is an ideal platform to address the exacting requirements for such an in-network, multi-protocol scenario:

  • Support for all the standards-based protocols required to act as a gateway between IMS and GSM/ UMTS networks (Dh, Si, CAP, ISC)
  • In addition to CAP, it also supports the older INAP CS1 protocol
  • Stability, resilience, scalability and performance.
  • N-way active symmetric, software fault tolerance architecture (a “call” or “session” does not fail when a cluster member fails)
  • Single system image management regardless of cluster architecture
  • On-line application upgrade, on-line application server upgrade
  • Command line and web-based provisioning and management tools
  • Alarms, statistics, tracing, per MSISDN tracing
  • Fully Integrated Product Set

The Rhino Reverse IM-SSF has been designed for easy integration with GSM/ UMTS and IMS infrastructure to allow systems vendors and integrators to quickly and cost-effectively benefit from the enhanced technical capabilities and commercial opportunities that JAIN SLEE and Rhino provide. (For example, it can provide additional connectivity to any network, directory or IT system. Additional call/ session control service logic can also be implemented on the platform if it is required). The Rhino R-IM-SSF can also be used with other Rhino products such as the Rhino Service Interaction SLEE or the Rhino Application Servers.
